Subject: Problems with Shanghai 2nd Dynasty on Win2000...

Alright, Do any of you have any problems with running Shanghair 2nd Dynasty in Win2k. My first question got no responses from anybody who actually uses Win2k and S2D, but a response from Activision and Tom S. says that it's doable. Well apparently it's not for me yet. I'm in the process of downloading the V1.1 patch but I can run it fine when I install it, but once I reboot I get an error when trying to run from CD or even if I run the executable from the hard drive (with the CD in the CD drive of course). I get "fatal error, cannot access APBLDR.Q3 or something similar that is on the CD. Even when I go to browse the CD using explorer, it denies me access to many of the subdirectories. saying that "resource is in use".. You're thinking something with my CD is messed up, well I've tried both CD's (I have a CDRW and a CD-ROM), both do the same thing, I've put in another CD and it browses and runs fine. I'm thinking it's something to do with the Autoplay but I'm not sure, something is running once you put in the CD-ROM... I've temporarily forgotten how to disable it but has anybody had this problem, speak up please!

Jay also emailed me, and I have emailed him information about how to get the game to work in Windows 2000.

PLEASE, if anyone is having any problem with my game, just Email me! Tech support questions are not interesting for the group readers.

Jay, you wrote:

Jay, don't try to run the game from the CD. Run it from the hard drive (with CD in, like you said). Once the v1.1 patch is downloaded the game will run fine in Windows 2000, IF you have your machine configured 100% properly. The workaround solution I sent you also works. Just email me if you still have problems.

OK, just trying to decide which Windows based MahJongg game to get. I'm interested in the standalone Chinese version and I don't have a dedicated phone line so the internet play of Shanghai 2nd Dynasty is not important. How is the scoring done in this game? Winner takes all or is it individualized such that you could lose a hand but win money? Special hands involved?

Lastly, how does it run in Windows 2000? I just installed Win2k on my machine and I'm wondering for those of you who have Win 2k and this game, have you run into any problems? Activision tech support says no problems found yet but it also wasn't thoroughly tested with it so I guess we're all on our own here...

If you want to save money, buy Shanghai Dynasty instead of Shanghai 2nd Dynasty. But if your monitor is set to 1024x768 or higher resolution, then DO buy 2nd Dynasty.

The Chinese rules we use in those games is the Classical game -- not the HK rules, not the Taiwan rules, not New Style, and not the current Official mainland rules. If you want HK, Taiwan, New Style, or Official, then don't buy Shanghai. Check the games in FAQ 5 at http://www.activision.com/games/shanghai/faq/faqmain.html.

There's an option. You can have either Payment to All OR Payment to Winner Only.

> Special hands involved?

Shanghai 2nd Dynasty does allow special limit hands -- pair hands and jewel hands are selectable options. Shanghai 2nd Dynasty has a couple more features than Shanghai Dynasty.

Jay, Windows 2000 is not a gamer-friendly plug-n-play system, but the game can be made to work if you are a power user familiar with the unfriendlinesses of Windows 2000 and if you download the v1.1 patch. The storebought game may give you a snag when you try to install, but there's a workaround (but downloading the v1.1 patch is better than the workaround).

Email me anytime with any questions about the game.
